Will Casino Skill Gaming Ever Be as Big as Poker?

by Bodog Casino | Nov 5 2009

Unless you try to ignore all things with playing cards and felt, you know the growth spurt poker has gone through in the last decade. Poker is huge, Donald Trump “huge.”

Everybody seems to know the basics for Texas Holdem. Channel surf long enough and you're bound to find a show with some pros in a money game. And the celebs; you almost want to roll your eyes at the at the amount of celebs that infest the World Series of Poker. Don't you people have enough money already?

But what about the other non-poker casino games? Remember them? It seems like as soon as poker got to hang with the popular crowd people have forgotten the guy that brought them to the party. Everyone plays blackjack, Caribbean stud poker, roulette and baccarat, but will these kinds of games ever get the VIP status of poker?

The answer's a little complicated.

To be honest it's hard to see a game like blackjack or roulette ever getting the mainstream appeal of poker. Although the games have been casino mainstays for centuries, they don't have that TV appeal. Casino games are played versus a dealer, not against other players which makes it more of a technical game than poker. With poker it's man versus man, and the best hand doesn't always win. This makes it more a competitive game along the lines of chess or even football, which is why it appears on ESPN all the time.

That doesn't mean that casino gaming will lose its clientele. People will always play casino games, and that includes online poker players and poker players visiting Vegas for a tournament. However, competitive games like Texas Holdem can sometimes lose their popularity to a new fad.

More recently Hollywood Dominoes has taken over L.A. as the celeb game of choice. People are throwing Domino parties, and even fundraiser with tournaments. That has spawned online casinos to offer the game. Starting to sound familiar? While casino games will always have its steady clientele, poker risks going the way of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” or “Deal or No Deal”.

So don't fret, casino games may never reach the popularity of poker, but they will never disappear.
